Business Cards – a Sign of Respect in Asian Culture

South and Southeast Asians confer more respect to business cards than other cultures. To us, a business card is a handy way of getting information about a business, but to certain Asians, a business card is a miniaturized physical representation of a business or person and must always be treated with respect.

The Asian business card culture has many nuances because of this, and as a result there are many types of protocols involving printing, giving, receiving and storing business cards. When printing an Asian business card, it is important to print in both English and in the natural language of the area where the card will be used.

For example, Japanese use the double-sided printed business cards to write Japanese characters on one side, and then to reproduce the same information, in English, on the other. The same method will be repeated from country to country – in China, Chinese business cards will be printed both in English and in the approved Chinese dialect.

A chinese translation company will prove to be very handy in the event that you do not trust yourself with the dialect. Not only does this allow for a farther advertising range, but the fact that two languages are used shows consideration and class.

Business cards are given away at meetings and also upon meeting a new acquaintance. In this way they resemble the calling cards used during earlier times. No matter the occasion, a business card is somewhat of a badge of honor and one must always follow the correct protocol.

To offer a card to someone, always use both hands. One-handed approaches are fine in some less formal cases, but the two-handed delivery tells the recipient that they are respected. It is customary for some cultures to bow when doing this.

If receiving chinese business cards, use both hands, in the same manner you would use to give away a card. Using both hands signal that you recognize the giver, and that you give them respect in turn. It also shows that you are a humble person – a trait that is well respected in the business world.

Never write on, or fold or otherwise crush a business card in the person’s presence, unless you want to undo all of your hard work. Doing the above shows a great disdain for your colleagues and may mar relationships with that business or that person forever. Instead, keep the cards in a card-holder, or on the desk next to you.

If none of these are available, then keep holding onto the card without crushing or folding it. Refer to the card from time to time to let the givers see your interest in them and what they have to say.

In short, asian business cards should be treated as if you are holding a miniaturized version of the person or business with which you are conferring. You value their business or friendship, and will show this by not defacing, abusing or losing the card.
