A Rewarding Career As a Cantor

If you are looking into music careers that combine your love for music with your love for religion, then consider studying to become a Cantor. The Cantor is like a choir director but for a synagogue. You will be in charge of the musical aspect of the religious organization. You will lead music and prayer with the congregation to increase the spiritual experience. When the children of the synagogue are preparing for their Bat or Bar Mitzvah, you will aid them by overseeing their singing and chanting studies. In addition to overseeing the music side of things, you may also be responsible for aiding the Rabbi with his duties such as visiting those who are ill or homebound and speaking with those who are mourning. When you are studying to become a Cantor, you will have to choose a particular area of Judaism to focus on – Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox.
